We produce all standard and custom aluminum extrusion alloys and tempers, shapes and sizes, by both direct and indirect extrusion.
Here are descriptions of some of the aluminum alloys that Hydro produces globally. Not all alloys are available in every region. Most Hydro locations extrude aluminum in the 6000 series.
This non-heat treatable alloy is commonly used in heat transfer applications for the automotive and HVACR industries, and in the electrical industry. The 1050 alloy has good corrosion resistance and higher thermal conductivity than other alloys.
These non-heat treatable alloys feature good corrosion resistance, workability and weldability. The 3003/3103 alloys develop strengthening from cold working only, and are typically used in the automotive and HVACR industries. They offer good corrosion resistance and mechanical properties that exceed 1xxx-series alloys. Applications include radiators for cars and air conditioning evaporators.
This alloy is easier to weld than 6xxx-series alloys and is more predictable in terms of post-weld strength. The 5083 alloy excels in corrosion resistance in a salt-water environment and is therefore the material of choice for marine hull structure applications.
This alloy is most frequently used in applications that require the highest quality finish, and where strength is not the crucial factor. Applications that use the 6060 alloy include picture frames and exclusive furniture.
This magnesium and silicon alloy is the best choice when welding or brazing is required. It has structural strength and toughness, good corrosion resistance and good machining characteristics. The 6061 alloy is used extensively as a construction material, most commonly in the manufacture of marine and automotive components.
This popular alloy is in the heat treatable category. The 6063 alloy has a finer grain structure than 6061 and will provide the best cosmetic appearance after anodizing. It is highly corrosion resistant with good workability and weldability. Common uses include cylinder tubing, electrical bus conductors and architectural applications.
This alloy is not suitable for decorative anodizing, but it certainly qualifies as an excellent choice for high-strength building and structural components. Applications for the 6082 alloy include trailer profiles for trucks as well as for floors.
The 7108 alloy has high strength and good fatigue strength, but limited extrudability and formability. It is susceptible to stress corrosion in areas with high stresses. Welding should only be carried out in areas where the loading is lower. Typical applications are structures for building and transport applications where high strength is required. The material is suitable for anodizing for protective purposes.
There many different uses for aluminum channel, largely due to aluminum's many positive characteristics. 6061 aluminum channel, also referred to as structural aluminum channel, is extruded aluminum channel that features inside radius corners. This makes it ideal for applications that require greater strength but lighter weight.

Aluminum Bar Stock

Aluminum Angle Stock
Aluminum comes in just beneath steel on the list of most used metals and it is commonly used to make angle stock. Angles are L-shaped cross-sections which can have equal or unequal “legs”. Extruded aluminum angles are also made with different profiles, depending on whether they are intended for architectural or structural use. Aside from their shapes, aluminum angles are made of different aluminum alloys and can have different tempers. Aluminum angle stock has a myriad of uses in construction applications in nearly every industry. It is considerably less expensive than wood, is lighter in weight, insect proof, and resists warping and cracking from water damage.

Making the most of aluminum’s light weight and malleability, the extrusion process creates shapes by heating a billet, or cylindrical log, of aluminum alloy to soften it and then forcing it under high pressure through a special steel die using a hydraulic press or ram. The end result is a piece of aluminum that will maintain the specific shape of the die.
Aluminum I Beam
Quality aluminum I-beams, also referred to as structural aluminum beams, are an extruded aluminum product that often utilizes 6061 aluminum alloy due to the fact that it is strong, light weight, heat-treatable, and is easy to weld, cut, form and machine. I-beams are the standard shape for aluminum beams used in floor and ceiling joists to ensure that a structure will be physically sound. 6061 aluminum I-beams also lend themselves well to being anodized -- an important consideration when they are used in the construction of structures which will be exposed to weather extremes or other corrosive elements.
Thanks to its enormous versatility, T-slot aluminum is used for a wide variety of framing applications. T-slots are structural aluminum extrusions that permit modular construction and can be used to construct any imaginable project.
Aluminum conduit is available in rigid and flexible configurations for use in a number of applications. Aluminum is a useful alloy for Electrical Metallic Tubing (EMT), to protect wiring runs in a variety of electrical installations. Because it can be readily bent on-site to specific radius and directions, EMT aluminum conduit is also a popular material in commercial industrial buildings. Rigid aluminum conduit is an excellent replacement for rigid steel conduit in virtually all locations and applications, providing a per-foot cost savings of 10-40%, labor savings of 35-75%, 1/3 the weight and easier fabrication in the field compared to rigid steel conduit.

Uses of Aluminum Extrusions

Aluminum is well-suited to anodizing, making it one of the most respected and commonly used materials for consumer, commercial and industrial products in comparison to other metals. Other nonferrous metals, such as magnesium and titanium, can be anodized, but the composition of aluminum makes it ideally suited to the process.
Aluminum is Earth’s most abundant metallic element, but it is rarely found as-is. It is present in many minerals, but its primary source is bauxite ore. The Bayer process converts it to aluminum oxide and then the Hall-Heroult process converts it to metallic aluminum. Before the Hall-Heroult process, invented in 1866, the production of aluminum was a complicated and expensive process. In fact, it was once referred to as the “Metal of Kings” because it was more expensive to produce than gold.
